Hello there! I'm Jess, and I'm thrilled to welcome you to my corner of the internet. As a passionate and empathetic counsellor, I've embarked on a journey to create a space that's warm, approachable, and above all, a reflection of my authentic self. So, grab a virtual cup of tea or coffee, and let's dive into the heart of who I am and what I bring to the world of counselling.
Breaking Free from the "Blank Slate":
In the realm of therapy, I've chosen not to adhere to the traditional "blank slate" approach. Modern counselling is evolving, and I believe in breaking down the walls that can make the therapeutic relationship feel distant or clinical. Instead, I bring my authentic self into the room—a real person with passions, experiences, and a genuine desire to connect. This departure from the traditional model is gaining traction among modern counsellors who recognize the value of authenticity in fostering a meaningful therapeutic alliance.
Who Am I Beyond the Counselling Room?
In my downtime, you'll find me on a yoga mat, exploring the great outdoors on a hiking trail, or experimenting with new recipes in the kitchen. I cherish moments with my partner and our furry companion, always seeking balance and joy in the simple pleasures of life. These passions aren't just hobbies; they're woven into the fabric of my counselling approach—balancing the profound with the playful.
From Classroom to Career:
My journey started with a BA Honours in Psychology, paving the way for a deeper exploration of human sexuality and relationships. However, my arrival in the world of counselling came after many detours and “learning opportunities” (that’s how we reframe failures, right?). After a couple of cross-province moves, a foray into Holistic Nutrition and catering, and the dissolution of one long-term relationship and intentional building of another one, I was ready to pick up where I left off with my passion for intimacy and connection and all the ways relationships affect our wellbeing. Completing a diploma in professional counselling, I continued to refine my skills. But it doesn't stop there—I've delved into the intricacies of relationships through Level 1 and 2 Gottman Method Couples Therapy, adding layers to my understanding of love, conflict, and attachment. Additionally, my curiosity led me to explore the world of Consensual Non-Monogamy, earning Level 1: Clinical Skills and Interventions through the Institute for Relational Intimacy.
Spending 6 months doing intakes with a local nonprofit truly opened my eyes to the unique qualities of each individual, yet also their common need for intimacy, connection, and understanding. I left with a resounding sense of how structural factors can limit personal autonomy, and more motivation than ever to help clients understand and harness the power of our nervous systems in shaping our responses to life's challenges.
More Than Just Talk Therapy:
As your counsellor, I bring a unique blend of coaching and counselling to the table. It's about creating healthy practices, fostering fulfillment, and embracing an intentional life. My toolbox includes attachment theory, polyvagal theory, somatic and embodiment practices, CBT, mindfulness, parts work, and the wisdom of Gottman Couples Therapy. If you’ve tried talk therapy before and found it just “didn’t work” for you, or feel you’ve gotten as far as you can with that but there is still a piece missing, I’m with you. My knowledge of the nervous system and personal experience have helped me understand that there is only so much you can accomplish with a “top-down” approach (using the mind to override feelings and behaviours). Often, our emotions and patterns of behaviours are “locked in” to our nervous system as trauma or stress responses. Using body-based (somatic, or “bottom-up”) approaches can help identify and release those responses in a way that impacts the way we think and feel, but also gradually creates increased flexibility in the way we respond to triggers.
Life's Lessons as a Source of Wisdom:
My personal journey, including leaving a long-term relationship and rediscovering love, has equipped me with profound insights into the complexities of relationships. I understand the transformative power of genuine connection and empathy, especially for those navigating attachment wounds or unhealthy relationship patterns.
So, whether you're navigating relationship challenges, dealing with anxiety or depression, or exploring the realms of consensual non-monogamy, know that you're not alone. Let's make the first step towards positive change. I'm here for you.
Warmly,
Jess
